History of Cooperative Movement:
According to historians, the cooperative movement started in Britain, America and other countries during the 19th century. Robert Owen (1771-1858) is considered the father of the co-operative movement. In 1844 the Rochdale Pioneers founded the modern co-operative movement in Lancashire, England, to provide an affordable alternative to poor quality and adulterated food and provisions, using any surplus to benefit the community. India’s first co-operative society was registered in 1905. The first co-operative movement in Asia was started in Kanaginhal in Gadag, Karnataka under the leadership of Sri Siddanagouda Sanna Ramanagouda Patil (1843–1933), popularly known as. ‘Father of the Co-operative Movement in Karnataka’ The Agricultural Credit Co-operative Society was launched at Kanaginhal on 8.7.1905. This was the first case of its kind in Asia
Cooperative Movement in India
The principle of cooperation was in practice in India long ago, the so-called cooperative movement which started with the application of cooperative principles in business organization in western countries. A student of Indian sociology knows that in ancient rural India people cooperated with each other for mutual benefit and this is the basis of the modern cooperative movement. Asian societies have adopted cooperative principles that have been successful in the world. The co-operative movement in India can be seen in two phases, namely the pre-independence era and the post-independence era with India’s first “Urban Co-operative Credit Society” being formed soon after. It was registered at Kanjeevaram in Madras Presidency in October, 1904.
Anionya Co-operative Bank Limited (ACBL), based in the city of Vadodara (formerly Baroda), Gujarat, was the first co-operative bank in India. Amul is an Indian dairy cooperative society based in Anand, Gujarat, India. Established in 1946, it is a cooperative brand managed by a cooperative body, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited (GCMMF), which is today jointly owned by the 3.6 million (3.6 million) milk producers in Gujarat and the apex body Is. There are 13 District Milk Unions spread across 13,000 villages in Gujarat.
Cooperative movement has been successful in many states of India.
Cooperative societies have a golden history in many states of the country including Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
Initially, the cooperative movement in Maharashtra was mainly confined to the field of agricultural credit, but later, it spread to other sectors such as agro-processing, agricultural marketing, sugar cooperatives, fisheries cooperatives, cooperative dairy societies. Cooperative society is working actively in every sphere of life like textile, housing society, consumer stores etc. Amul Cooperative Society of Gujarat is a big example in the country. Similarly, many successful societies are also working in the southern states of Karnataka, Maharashtra etc. Government owned cooperative societies and PECs are located in every state in the country,
whose complete administrative Structure is formed. Successful government cooperative societies include National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC), National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED), Indian Farmers Fertilizer Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), and Cooperative Rural Development Trust (CORDET) etc.
In the banking sector, Punjab and Maharashtra Cooperative (PMC) Bank, Bharat Cooperative Bank and Saraswat Cooperative Bank etc. are prominent. Realizing its usefulness, the present Government of India has expanded the scope of work of the Cooperative Ministry and made it useful. Today, almost every bank in the country A separate Ministry of Cooperation has been constituted in the state. Our effort is to strengthen the livelihood of the common people in the state of Haryana by connecting them with this movement.
Self-Reliance campaign through cooperation.
To promote the cooperative movement in Haryana state, The Vikas Bharat Multipurpose Co-operative Society Limited has now started a self-reliance campaign through cooperatives, under which vigorous work is being done to create awareness in rural and urban areas. Generally, a common man is not able to start any big enterprise or business on his own, is not able to market his product or service, as a result, he is able to live a normal or deprived life, whereas like-minded people come together and do some work. A lot can be achieved. The main objective of this campaign is to bring people on one platform and connect them with each other for everyone’s benefit and welfare and to create as many employment opportunities as possible. Due to the Industrial Revolution, small, micro and medium scale village industries which strengthened the rural economy were destroyed. With the arrival of multinational companies and the entry of the same company into different sectors, they became dominant in the Indian market due to which farmers, labourers, villagers and People of the middle class have become limited consumers. Understanding the importance of cooperation, the government also declared the National Cooperative Policy in 2002 and made various positive provisions in it. Great freedom fighters like Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak etc. have made invaluable contributions in the field of cooperation. To implement the dreams of those great men and the bright future of the common people in a planned manner on the ground, the campaign “Self-reliance through cooperation” was launched. It is going on. On the basis of our strong intentions and good intentions, we have achieved initial success in this and in future also we will definitely be successful in this and will give our best contribution in building developed Haryana as well as developed India.
